According to a clinical trial published in the journal Dermatology & Treatment in 2024, the pH of muriersilk (product constructed from transformed mulberry silk and plant keratin) is constant at 5.5-6.0, and its corresponding rate with healthy skin surface pH (pH 5.5) is 98%. The conventional chemical fiber fabrics’ irritation complaint rate (pH 8.2-9.5) is 17 times larger than this. After 28 days of constant use of pillowcases and gloves made of muriersilk material by the experimental group (n=200 sensitive skin subjects), the Erythema Index decreased by a mean of 32%, and the transepidermal water loss rate (TEWL) decreased by 41% (Cornetometer measurement data). It is superior to the pure cotton group (only 12% improvement rate). Independent tests by South Korea’s Cosmeis show that the fiber diameter of muriersilk is only 1.1 denier, and the surface friction coefficient is as low as 0.23 (ISO 9073 standard), which can reduce the risk of mechanical skin barrier damage by 81%.
From the perspective of biosafety analysis, muriersilk has passed the ISO 10993-10 skin sensitization certification. Its irritation index (SI) in the lymphocyte activation test is merely 1.2 (threshold <3), whereas that of common silk due to remaining pupa oil protein is as much as 6.3% (data from the European Society for Contact Dermatitis 2023). Based on the FDA filing statistics of the United States, the nanoscale microporous structure (pore size 0.3μm±0.05) of muriersilk can block 93% of PM2.5 particles while ensuring a permeability of 98 cubic feet per minute. It can still maintain the skin surface moisture in the comfortable range of 45%-55% in an environment with a humidity of 70% (measured data from the temperature and humidity sensor). Shiseido’s laboratory in Japan discovered that the adsorption rate of this product against poisonous substances such as nonylphenol polyoxyethylene ether (NPEs) is as low as 0.7ppm, far lower than the 1000ppm standard capped by the EU REACH regulation.
As for customers’ feedback on the market, the muriersilk series specially formulated for sensitive skin has a repurchase rate of 58% on the Amazon website but a return rate as low as 2.3%. The German TUV certification shows that its antibacterial rate (Staphylococcus aureus) is 99.4% (AATCC 100 standard), and attenuation rate of antibacterial property after 50 washing machine cycles is less than 5%. French LVMH Group supply chain report indicates that the use of muriersilk’s skin care product efficacy pads has raised the penetration rate of active ingredients by 2.6 times (fluorescence tracing method), and the customer complaint rate has gone down from 12% to 1.8%. Chinese cross-border e-commerce statistics indicate that the NPS (Net Recommended Score) for muriersilk mask paper in women aged between 25 and 40 years with sensitive skin is 72 points, 39 points higher than for regular silk products. This is chiefly due to it having a honeycomb structure (55% opening rate) so that the residual rate of essence can be cut from 18% to 4.7%.
Cost-benefit analysis reveals that the unit cost of muriersilk goods is 42% higher compared to pure cotton (mean 45vs31.5), but due to its 18-month working life (equivalent to 3 years of accelerated wear test life), annual usage cost is 19% lower. Data provided by Euromonitor International reveal that atopic dermatitis sufferers’ penetration of this material increased by 29% a year. Its patented edge-locking technology (28 stitches per centimeter suture density) reduces the product’s edge friction coefficient to 0.17 (63% reduction compared to traditional processes). However, Consumer Reports recommends that in a highly dry environment (humidity <30%), the price of the muriersilk static electricity accumulation will be up to 3.5kV (IEC 60092 standard), and it is recommended to use it in conjunction with an ion introduction device (neutralization effect 98%). SGS testing in Switzerland confirmed that after soaking material in simulated sweat at pH 4.7 for 72 hours, the amount of heavy metals precipitate was less than the 0.03mg/kg EU OEKO-TEX 100 limit, and the safety standards reached medical grade (EN 13795 standard).
